This conversation was recorded online with Anthony in the Kimberley and Paul at home in California on 30 September 2021 (Australian time), with thanks to the team at the Derby Media Aboriginal Corporation for use of their studio.Learn about more environmental topics impacting our natural environment here! Updated Episode Intro Notes Hawken is a renowned lecturer who has keynoted conferences and led workshops on the impact of commerce upon the environment, and has consulted with governments and corporations throughout the world. Paul Hawken is an environmentalist, entrepreneur, and bestselling author of eight books that have been published in thirty languages in more than fifty countries and have sold more than two million copies. The term drawdown is now in generic use, employed and referred to thousands of times a day, and the book’s conclusions became the “bible” for over a trillion dollars of funds managed by numerous financial institutions. Before the book was published, the goal and word were not mentioned in climate literature. So how do we change this? How do we, as this one generation, engage the majority of humanity and fundamentally shift our collective course?ĭrawdown is in its 14th printing, was a NYT bestseller, is published in 14 languages, has been referred to and used by heads of state, is part of the curriculum on every grade level from 4th grade to MIT graduate school, and is placed in a New Zealand hotel chain alongside the Gideon Bible.ĭrawdown named the goal. And, most people in the world remain disengaged. And that’s in a context where we’re still going backwards in terms of greenhouse gas emissions, global warming, our health, and other critical crises. If Drawdown was what-could-be-done, Regeneration is how-to-get-it-done. The not-for-profit Regeneration organisation is developing an extraordinary set of online guides and resources, teaching materials and media productions to assist our efforts, whoever and wherever we are. And like Drawdown, it doesn’t end at the book. Regeneration is billed as the first book to describe the burgeoning regeneration movement spreading rapidly around the world. ![]() ![]() ![]() One of our plans for the first evening was to try the new pizza window at Via Napoli. ![]() Some of the regulations pertaining to activities, personal decision-making, and transportation services also vary between an ALR and a PCH. In addition, at least one staff member must be trained in CPR for every 35 residents in an ALR. PCH regulations do not specify an initial training period, the annual training requirement is 12 hours, and specific dementia training is not mandated. This is followed annually by 2 hours of dementia training and 16 hours of general training (including areas such as the signs and symptoms of infection and behavioral management techniques). With regard to staff training, workers in an ALR must have 18 hours of initial training prior to working unsupervised, plus an additional 4 hours of dementia training. In a small PCH with only 1-15 residents, only one direct care staff member must remain awake at all times. All direct care staff in an ALR must remain awake at all times when on duty, as well as in a PCH if the PCH has 16 or more residents. A PCH does not have these requirements, although they may choose to employ nurses and a dietician. An ALR must have a licensed nurse on duty or on call at all times, and a registered dietician must also be on staff or under contract. Staffing levels and staff training requirements also differ between these two types of care. Other differences include specifications about automatic external defibrillators, air conditioning, and the availability of beverages and snacks. No emergency notification system is required in a PCH, and up to four residents may share a bedroom. At least one toilet, sink, and wall mirror must be available for every 6 or fewer users (includeing staff) and at least one shower or tub for every 10 or fewer users. Private refrigerators and microwaves would be the resident’s responsibility to provide, and living unit doors are not required to lock. In a PCH, if the minimum size of public spaces is defined, they are smaller than those in an ALR. No more than two residents can share a living unit in an ALR. Public spaces and living units must be of a certain minimum size residents must be offered a small refrigerator and microwave for their living units and each living unit must have a door that locks (except for special care units) as well as a bathroom with a toilet, sink, wall mirror, tub or shower, and emergency notification system. In order to call itself an ALR, a facility must also meet certain requirements for the physical accommodations available in the building. While some supplemental services may be available, an individual with increased care needs may be asked to move from a PCH to another facility which provides a higher level of care. In PCH regulations, however, basic and supplemental services are not outlined. In addition, since care needs may increase over time, an ALR is required to provide or arrange for the provision of supplemental services such as hospice, specialized cognitive support services, physical and occupational therapy, and skilled nursing services. An ALR is designed to allow individuals to age in place, and the regulations define specific basic assisted living service packages. The extent of the services which are provided is one of the main differences between these two types of care. Let’s examine some of the regulations which distinguish an ALR from a PCH. To the casual observer, both types of care look very similar. As a result, both types of care remain primarily private pay, and rather than adapt their buildings and services to meet the new ALR requirements, most facilities chose to remain under the PCH regulations. Assisted Living Residences were to become the recipients of these funds, however, changes to public benefit programs (primarily Medical Assistance) to allow for payments to ALRs never materialized. One motive for this change may have been the desire to make public funds available to help pay for care in a facility which isn’t a nursing home. These two names were used interchangeably for many years, but in 2011, new regulations took effect which separated these two types of care. An Assisted Living Residence (ALR) is one of these, and the other is a Personal Care Home (PCH). ![]() In Pennsylvania, there are two types of facilities which will provide 24 hour supervision for adults and help with the tasks of daily living such as bathing, dressing, medication administration, meal preparation, etc. People who require some assistance with their daily routines, but do not need the level of care provided in a nursing home, often utilize the term “assisted living” when beginning to look for a place to receive this type of service. ![]() ![]() ![]() This will bring up a list of actions and ther associated keyboard shortcuts. If you’re like me-a Gmail user who wants a real Mac app, and ideally one that’s a better fit to Gmail than Apple Mail-I strongly recommend that you try Mimestream. Jhaveri also says he’s planning an iOS version, and I’d be interested in that, too. I’m glad he’s someone who gets why people would use Gmail and want a Mac app dedicated to it-because I’m that person. Jhaveri says “Email is my passion,” and I wouldn’t stand in the way of anyone who feels passionately about something. The app is written in Swift and feels like a real, native Mac app. (Disclosure: SaneBox is a former sponsor.) It also supports Gmail’s priority Inbox system, though I instead use a series of Gmail tags created by SaneBox. Gmail has some specific quirks-most notably the difference between archiving a message and deleting it-that Mimestream understands innately. Most importantly, it uses Gmail’s API ( not IMAP) to quickly display and archive mail, and to efficiently search my mail repository. (And yes, you can close off the message preview if you prefer to open messages in their own windows.) Mimestream will look familiar to anyone who has used Apple Mail-it’s got a multi-column design with mailboxes on the left, a message list in the center, and message content on the right. (You can sign up at the Mimestream website to request beta access.) I’ve been using it for a couple of months and I fully intend to pay for it when it emerges from beta testing. My frustrations with Apple Mail had driven me to Gmail, and Mailplane was the perfect way to use Gmail on a Mac-in a separate app, with Mac keyboard shortcuts and drag-and-drop support and everything else, while still keeping the speed and efficience of the Gmail web interface. Unfortunately, back in June the makers of Mailplane announced that they were letting the app die due to Google banning embedded browsers from Gmail. I’ve been using Mailplane as my email client for something like a decade. Mimestream is a Mac app reminiscent of Apple Mail, but it uses the Gmail API. I don’t make large bone-in hams often, so thankfully it’s easy to find ham bones in many supermarkets. To flavor the beans, a ham bone with plenty of meat still attached is ideal. The underlying vegetal flavor actually elevates the beans. Much like a soup, ham and beans starts with a base of onion, carrot, and celery. Since it’s hard to know, I always start by soaking the beans, just in case! If the dried beans are freshly dried, soaking is not always important. This dish is all about the beans, both in the flavor and the texture. Canned beans have a great purpose and come in handy in many dishes where the beans aren’t the most important part.
